PV Panels Are The Answer to Powering Properties Sustainably
04 Dec 2023
Sustainability is top of mind across many industries, and the property and housebuilding sector is no exception. Recently, the sustainability landscape has taken on a new significance due to the UK government’s drive for carbon reduction and concerns about the rising costs of energy compelling homeowners, businesses and housebuilders alike to think of more efficient ways of powering buildings. Although solar energy is not a new concept, these recent developments have made the prospect of solar panels even more appealing.
It has become evident in recent years that energy generation via renewable sources is considered the best substitution for fossil fuels. Solar power utilises the sun’s energy as photovoltaic (PV) cells in solar boards to generate power, with the absence of greenhouse gas emissions. Given the abundance of solar energy and the lack of carbon emissions, harnessing this energy source is one of the key methods to meeting future energy demands while preserving the environment. Subsequently, the ever-increasing concern to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and minimise carbon emissions as backed by government policy is expanding the development of the renewable energy market.
Global demand for solar energy surges
It’s not just the UK that is gearing up for a more sustainable energy landscape. The international energy network is currently undergoing an overhaul to take advantage of the benefits of solar power. BloombergNEF reports that as of Q3 2023, the global solar market is hitting record highs in volume of installations, with global solar installations expected to rise 56% in the second half of 2023 across key international markets including Europe, India, China, and North America and the Caribbean.
Solar could be the answer to Britain’s energy crisis
According to a 2023 policy brief published by the University of Oxford’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, Britain’s energy needs could be met entirely by wind and solar. The school’s research finds that wind and solar can exceed the highest energy demand forecasts for 2050 and provide nearly ten times current electricity demand (299 TWh/year). The findings suggest that up to 2,896 TWh a year could be generated by wind and solar, against the demand forecast of 1,500 TWh/year.
Moreover, the recent series of heatwaves across Europe this summer has seen the higher solar output help satisfy energy demands, with photovoltaics accounting for a significant proportion of energy generation. Even in countries with cooler climates and less sunshine, such as Belgium, solar energy has covered more than 100% of the extra energy needed during midday spikes in power demand, according to Reuters.
Why solar panel installation is on the rise
Many property owners have made a recent decision to adopt solar panels to take advantage of the benefits they bring. Furthermore, Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan is dedicated to enhancing London's solar energy capacity on its journey to Net Zero and has introduced the London Solar Opportunity Map. Under the plan, the majority of new developments in London will be required to install solar panels. For many new developments across the country, solar panels will also be necessary to meet the requirements of the SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) report.
Savings in energy bills
One of the most attractive factors of solar panels is lowered electricity bills, through solar energy generation, helping to protect against rising energy costs. Over time, these savings in energy bills provide an excellent return on investment.
Government grants can make solar panels more affordable
Additionally, a government grant can help offset the upfront cost of solar panels, making renewable energy more accessible and affordable for a wider range of buyers. Moreover, eligible candidates are able to sell surplus renewable energy they generate back to the National Grid through energy suppliers.
Enhanced property value
Once installed, solar panels are extremely low maintenance and incur minimal upkeep costs, with a lifespan that can extend beyond 25 years. Additionally, homes with solar panels often have higher property values, as they are seen as more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
An effective method for reducing your carbon footprint
Solar power is a sustainable energy source that doesn’t produce greenhouse gases, helping to reduce pollution and reducing the risk of climate change. Many property owners looking to reduce their carbon footprint can be confident in the fact that they are contributing to environmental sustainability by powering their property through solar energy. For housebuilders, solar PV is excellent for helping to achieve SAP compliance due to its energy efficiency.
Solar technology is still developing
Ongoing research and development in solar technology are leading to increased efficiency and reduced costs, making solar power more accessible and effective. Innovative solar share systems are now being implemented internationally to connect multiple apartments to a single rooftop solar system, allowing apartment residents to appreciate the same benefits of a rooftop solar panel that individual homes have for years. At Whitecode, we are eager to implement progressive solutions such as solar share systems.
